	About
Bella Blumenschein is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, currently based in Brooklyn, NYC. In 2021 she graduated from Trinity College with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Creative Writing, and is currently pursuing her master’s in Liberal Studies at the New School for Social Research, where she explores the intersections of phenomenology, art making, psychoanalysis, and eastern philosophies while engaging with different independent publication projects. For many years she has been naturally drawn to photography and creative writing, and in 2017 she started water coloring. Since then, she has continuously been exploring other mediums including acrylic, photocollage, spoken poetry, filmmaking, and videoart.In May 2022 she had the opportunity to contribute to an exihibition at CalArts celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Week of Modern Art in Brazil. At the time she was also writing an article later published in a design and architecture magazine run by students based in Madrid, Spain. When moving to Philadelphia in the summer of 2022, she joined the Center of Emerging Visual Artists, created the Collage Collective, participated in local and international exhibitions, and was an active member of the Fleisher Art Memorial. 


In the summer of 2025 she was a member of the Arts, Letters &#38;amp; Numbers Craft 1o1 residency program. Now in NYC, she continues to get involved in the local artistic and academic communities. &#38;nbsp;

Context
It was brought to my attention, through strings of thoughts and sounds in space, that context is a layered, vague, and vast composition of expandable and contractible nature that shapes/outlines/ecapsulates lived moments within the invisible frames of space and time, infinitely adjustable to embrace or delimit our understandings and experiencings.

I’m thinking now of a circle, a pulsing sphere, that within stretched minds shape-shifts fluidly and constantly, and within stiffer ones remain resistant to movement. Would it make sense to speak of a watery mind? Mine is now thinking of how a stretched body naturally embraces a wider range of movements. I like the image of context as a sphere that sensically holds us together, shielding us from the risks of feeling too loose or too rigid within ourselves and our environments.

I also like playing mental games with my sphere, choreographing internal dances with space and time as the lead performers. I guide them like a maestro with the hands of my mind’s I, balancing the sphere midair as it expands and contrasts like an external beating heart.

         Floating under the open space we’ve all agreed to call the sky,
 
and the made-up Kárman Line,
 
which isn’t really a line,
 
but the general area where we could no longer breathe
 
and planes couldn't fly.

	SHIFTS AND PIECES

I find comfort in being on a plane that is about to take off, speeding with its tiny wheels, shaking the floor be
	
neath my feet with the threat to let go at any moment.

The almost-gone/almost-going of a plane that is a few seconds from flying makes me feel like I’m about to enter a wormhole that sucks me from here and throws me there. Looking out the window, I realize the sky is no longer black, but a bright royal blue with thin orange rays pointing up from somewhere below the earth. The engines start running, the ground begins to slowly move, and I remember to put the seat belt on.

The wheels speed faster and faster and faster and the adrenaline is almost tangible, brushing my skin, this physical thing that is me. I close my eyes and feel encapsulated by a shiny outline that contours my whole I, keeping me in the stillness, protected from here and from there. I wish this moment would last longer, as long as it can, as the thrill stems and steams from the pleasure of being shielded in the in-between.

With my feet heavy on the shaky floor and my back pressed against the hard compact seat, I simply am. And as much as I like here and there, feeling detached from the complications carried by each shift is like having my whole body immersed in warm water, the whole universe reduced to the size of a tub. Everything is so still and silent except for the glubglub of spills on the floor as I remain protected from the outer universe beyond my body and the water.

Sometimes reality escapes me and I crave being on a plane that is about to take off, speeding, almost-gone/almost-going, and I’m nowhere really. I crave those few seconds in which the shiftiness of my life is paralyzed, my mind is kept sheltered, as I dissolve like snow on a warm winter day. The shift frozen, everything melting.

I feel the plane lifting off the ground, flowing further and further towards the endless blueness of the sky as the orange rays grow thicker and brighter, the blueness thinner and lighter. The bubble suddenly bursts, the shiny outline fades and I am exposed to the shiftiness once again.</description>

How many boundaries exist within a body? What are the simultaneously accessible layers of existence? The carnal, the mental, the spiritual, the sensed, the spoken, the felt…. all communicate and birth one another in the
 cyclical metamorphoses innate to the human condition.

I don’t think anyone is able to affirm yes or no to the question of the existence of the soul, or accurately define what it is, where and how it maintains itself. In a world that is not purely physical or visible there is much that lies beyond that which is questionable and answerable, and I find myself returning to the border between the two; between what is knowable and what floats in a fast empty darkness where nothing exists. A nothingness so vast and wide it holds every possibility that could at any moment tip over and make themselves known. I hold on to the rope that divides the two, and can’t help but think about the parts of me that exist beyond what I can see. Can the mind really reach beyond itself?

I look back at writings of mine from years past and find this constant return to topics that revolve around the idea that we have outlines, borders, layers, meat, bones, nerves, vessels, boundaries…… And to think so much about something so peculiar, so simultaneously tactile and abstract, can be a bit disorienting. But I can’t help but feel wonder at the evasiveness of the sensation that boundaries are our contours in space where we cease to exist in our physicality. Our shores.

But if boundaries are where things meet, do they really exist? How do I have a boundary, if my body is made of frequencies? How do I have a boundary, if I have a speaking mouth, eyes, and ears? How do I have a boundary, if the moon imprints her force on my body and acts through it?

The body is that which defies the notions of interiority and exteriority: we are neither and both internal mind and external body. Internal in the sense of existing within and for ourselves as identifiable individuals, with hidden, contained parts. External in the sense of being available to the flesh of the world, available for other sentient beings in our conscious materiality, material spirituality, spiritual materiality, material consciousness ……..

Where seas converge shores blur, and in our encounters there is something of an absorbable component to being sensible and sentient for ourselves and others. But it is easier to find my outline than to find my center, and borderlessness is only felt at the border. Is the center not the possibility of being a bordered individual? Do bodies grow inward infinitely? Does the soul spread like blood? Beginnings and endings are boundaries in time instead of space. Durar no tempo é durar também no espaço…. Qual a espessura de um contorno?
